Sensaway began its journey in 2018. What is Sensaway’s mission?
Our mission is to contribute to a sustainable future by digitizing and optimizing industry. Virtually all industrial companies already have some kind of automation or smart systems, usually from several different suppliers. At Sensaway we want to help companies take the next step, through a solution that unifies all the data on a single platform and integrates it with the specific knowledge held by each company’s team.
Sensaway’s beginnings and core has been in the aquaculture industry. Why is that?
Aquaculture will play a crucial role in the sustainable production of protein needed to feed the world’s population, which is estimated to reach 10 billion by 2050. It is already one of the most efficient forms of protein production we have in terms of water and feed consumption, and there is still plenty of potential for improvement. At Sensaway we want to be part of this journey and contribute our expertise in the areas of data integration, data analytics and optimization.
Sensaway also works with other industries. What is the common factor?
Aquaculture was the perfect environment to start in. As a fast-growing industry, there is a great diversity of systems, practices and challenges.
As in other industries, the fact that they use a panoply of systems makes it difficult to oversee and learn from all the information generated on a daily basis. What makes us unique is this ability to adapt, which is necessary regardless of the industry in question. With our BlueEdge platform, we integrate and process data from the company’s various systems (from automation, sensing, excel files, APIs from other software…) to obtain actionable information, tailored to the company’s practices and challenges. All without having to invest in expensive equipment again.
Specifically, can you share some areas and applications of the platform?
In the area of aquaculture, the application of our software focuses on risk mitigation and the timely detection of problems. For example, instead of waiting for an alarm informing us that the fish lack oxygen in the water, we monitor the automation system in real time and inform the client that the system is struggling, before it has an impact on the fish.
We also have an interesting project in the gas industry, where the use of our platform focuses on optimizing system maintenance. With BlueEdge, the client has access to data from all the supply points in real time, thus ensuring that each point is visited only when necessary, while maintaining the security that the gas is supplied without interruption.
We are also very proud to share the application of our platform in the area of water saving, in partnership with Aqva More, another start-up from the Taguspark incubator. Aqva More has a very promising device that allows people to save water in their homes every time they use hot water. In this case, the use of Sensaway’s platform made it possible to integrate the data from all the Aqva More appliances, with two purposes. On the one hand, it provided Aqva More customers with a mobile app to track their data and savings. On the other hand, it has allowed the company to monitor the impact of its appliances globally in real time, and to improve customer support by knowing everything that is happening with their appliances through our platform.
Do you want to lift the veil on upcoming projects? How do you see 2023?
We’re very excited about 2023. We have three very interesting aquaculture projects using recirculation systems in Norway, Germany and the United States. These are aquacultures that, because they have the ability to clean and reuse their water, have a very low environmental impact and can be done far from the sea and rivers, close to the end consumers. These are projects that will allow us to improve our platform with machine learning algorithms, such as detecting problems with equipment by altering its normal function.
We are also going to start a project in the area of hydrogen production, which we are very excited about and hope to have news to share soon.
What factors led Sensaway to choose Taguspark – Cidade do Conhecimento as its home?
It was the perfect combination of several factors that made us want to be present at Taguspark.
On the one hand, we believe that the beauty of the spaces, the architecture, the quality of the location, the catering, the art and events are all crucial factors that boost our creativity, good mood, motivation to work and, in general, elevate any team.
Then there’s the quality of the companies within Taguspark, which open up many opportunities for learning and new collaborations. In particular, we’d like to note the quality of the start-ups and the sharing atmosphere in the incubator. Our collaboration with Aqva More is proof of this, and we hope it will be the first of many.
Finally, we noticed that the Taguspark team is very dedicated to ensuring that we have all the conditions we need, and we noticed a continuous effort to promote and boost their incubated companies.
